Summer, Fall, and More!
Summer, Fall, and More!
October 22nd, 2019
The Legislative Session ended on April 8, 2019, however my work for District 32 continues. I find it hard to believe that I am so busy;after all the Legislature is a 90 day job right?
You might think we used the time to catch up on everything we wanted to do during the 90 day session but had to put on hold; that’s not how I spent my interim.
How I spent my interim
I attended 3 Conferences
The Council of State Governments in Pittsburgh, I serve on the national Transportation Committee.
The Maryland Association of Counties Conference in Ocean City, where I facilitated a panel discussion on affordable housing.
The Financial Services Institute Conference in Washington DC where I also participated on a panel.
The Chesapeake Bay Trust, on which I serve, recently held their retreat in St. Michaels; also strategic planning sessions have taken place for several other boards that I serve on this summer. At the request of the County Executive, I am a member of the County’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. The Task Force is searching for ways to reduce gun violence in our communities, a preliminary report is expected in December.

I have made a number of site visits to location both in District 32 and around the State, including Arthur Slade School, Tipton Airport, North Laurel Recreation Center, Towson University, the Port of Baltimore, and 5G sites in Ocean City. I have attended numerous community and committee meetings and events, you may even have seen me at some.
I have been meeting with constituents and working on
legislation all interim.
Some of issues I am working on include:
Changes to the Anne Arundel County Liquor Board
Changes to Commercial Collections to make it easier for
constituents to pay their fees and vehicle fines,
changes to how judges are elected and what happens
whena judge is considered for suspension
changing the penalty for possessing an illegal gun
If you want to hear more about my legislation and the legislation that the Delegates from District 32 are considering, join our conversation at our Town Hall meeting on Monday, November 4th, 7:00 to 9:00 at Hebron Harman Elementary. We are happy to hear your ideas and share ours.
Maryland Live! Casino Funds
The Local Development Council recently awarded $19 million to nonprofit and community organizations working to benefit the communities and residents within a three mile radius of Live! Casino. Many good projects were funded, but the most significant is the final funds for the Severn Intergenerational Center. You can see a complete list here.
The Anne Community Development Services (ACDS) is the administering agency for Anne Arundel County’s Local Development Council (LDC) grants. Applications and additional information can be found on the County and Arundel Community Development Services, Inc. (ACDS) websites.

Currently, I am working with the Provinces Association and St. Marks to secure funding assistance to correct stormwater issues in the area.
I have made two appointments to various airport committees. I am grateful that Dan Woomer agreed to serve on the BWI Roundtable and Kevin Plessner has agreed to serve on the Airport Enhancement Grant Committee.
I am also looking for several volunteers to serve on my scholarship committee. The committee reviews the applications received and provides recommendations for awards. The task must be completed in time for the May Award Ceremonies at the High Schools. Contact my office if you are interested.

All of this to say that the work of the Senator does not end when Session ends, however I will admit I did clean a closet and visit the grandchildren as much as I could.
Thank you for granting me the honor and opportunity to serve as your representative in the Maryland Senate.
I truly appreciate your support and I look forward to seeing you in the community.
